The team of New Zealand scientists lowered the camera into a cave under the ice shelf, where they drilled a hole. As the camera sinks into the river, after a brief focus, numerous species emerge, including hundreds of shrimp-like crustaceans called amphipods. They found that dozens of different species thrive in a tiny patch of ocean floor beneath an ice shelf in Antarctica. For a place that has never been exposed to such creatures, the diversity of animals is astonishing. Scientists are beginning to question the habitability of the diversity of life, where the animals cannot be protected by the sun energy beam.
